HOW DOES A GIRAFFE GIVE BIRTH?
The giraffe stands when it gives birth, making the calf’s first experience a sharp drop from 6 feet. However, the baby’s head nearly always reaches the ground before the rest of the body exits the birth canal.
Female giraffes give birth to a calf about 15 months after mating with a male. The mother gives birth to calf while standing up, so the calf drops to the ground. The calf is about 2 meters tall, and during its first week it grows about a centimeter a day. About an hour after birth, the calf can walk. It suckles milk from its mother, but starts nibbling at other food within days.
